Rapper Kendrick Lamar has become the first rapper to win the Pulitzer award for music. His album ‘Damn’ released in 2017 and went platinum is the US just a month after release and the artist won five grammy’s for the album in January. Awarding bodies said Kendrick’s album “depicts the struggles of a modern African-American artist. His album rose quickly to fame just a month after release and talks about his upbringing, childhood trauma’s and the records the political and cultural issues of America.
The Pulitzer Prize is an American award given to individuals who excel in American journalism, poetry and literature and music. Music awards are mostly awarded to classical and Jazz musicians therefore this is a huge leap forward for African-American and hip hop culture. Kendrick Lamar becomes the first rapper to win this award breaking the norm and making the Pulitzer the trophy to beat and not Album of the Year at the Grammy’s.
